Resizing Files

Open Paint.NET.

Click on this link: Image from loc.gov titled: Lunch hour, part of Carbon Carbide Company (West Vaco). South Charleston, West Virginia

A window will open that displays a photo.

You will right click on the image, then click "save image as.."  Change the File Name to be Original.jpg  Inside your PhotoArt folder, create a new folder and title it Beginning.  Save Original.jpg inside this folder in your flash drive.

Now, go to Paint.NET.  Click the Open icon from the top toolbar.  It looks like a small yellow folder with a blue arrow.  A window will open.  Navigate to your PhotoArt folder and find Original.jpg.  Open it.

In the top toolbar, go to IMAGE-Resize.    You will see a window opens that looks like this:

We want to resize this image so it is at a high enough resolution that we can print it out.  So, change the Resolution from 72 to 300 pixels/inch.   Click OK and watch how the print size changes from 14.22" x 9.96" to 3.41" x 2.39".  If we were to print this out at 300 pixels/inch, that is the size it would be.  (pretty small!)

Have fun editing the photo in any way you want.  Explore the Adjustments and Effects menus in the top toolbar. Be creative!  You may use the tools (paint brush, eraser, rectangle tool, etc) as well.  When you are happy with your edited photo you may move on.  Below is my version.

Now, Save this version to your PhotoArt, Beginning folder.  You will go to File>Save as.. and change the file name to OriginalPRINT.jpg    We want to designate it as the version to PRINT.

Go to crouchphotoart.weebly.com.  Fill out the TURN IT IN form.  The assignment name is Resizing Files for PRINT. Upload your image titled OriginalPRINT.jpg.  Click SUBMIT to turn it in.

Now, in Paint.NET go to Image-Resize.  Highlight the bullet next to By Percentage.  Change the 100% to 25%.

Go to File-save as..  (MAKE SURE YOU NEVER JUST HIT SAVE, because that would copy over the previously saved version)

Now, save this image in your PhotoArt folder as OriginalBLOG.jpg.  This would be the image that you would upload and post to your blog.  It is much smaller than the original or the print version.

Go to crouchphotoart.weebly.com.  Fill out the TURN IT IN form.  The assignment name is Resizing Files for BLOG. Upload your image titled OriginalBLOG.jpg.  Click SUBMIT to turn it in.
