Texture Collection: Spring Break Assignment

Watch these YouTube videos at home...since you can't do it at school :(

Bryan Peterson Forms & Textures

Bryan Peterson Patterns (Seashells) <---pay attention to his instructions to "fill the frame"

Erika you will love this one. (other people don't need to view this one)

Great texture collection video <---------- this is the kind of photos we are looking for!!

Your assignment is to take at least 50 photos of textures.  Be sure to fill the frame.  Try to get a variety of colors and different textures.  We will be taking these photos and creating some artwork using them when we return from Spring Break.  They won't be due until the Wednesday 5/4 after Spring Break.

Part 2 of Composite Assignment

Notice the ELEMENTS  and PRINCIPLES of art used here.

-COLOR(Color scheme is limited to a black and white and red scheme)
-Red is used to create EMPHASIS
-REPETITION & PATTERN is used in the repeating white birds
-SHAPE is used as a repeating rectangle shapes where the body is cut into rectangles
-diagonal LINES are used where the body is cut into a diagonal line which mirrors the diagonal lines of the "give way" sign

For Part 2 of the composite assignment....take a few minutes and make a plan.  Think about the ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES of art.  I will be grading these based on the use of the Elements & Principles of art.  Creating an EMPHASIS (or focal point) is very important.  Think about color scheme.  If your artwork sends a creepy message, think of color schemes that go along with that, etc.

REPETITION is always a good idea.  What can you repeat to create an interesting composition?

You may use your own photos or photos from www.sxc.hu for this assignment.

5000 Word Essay due Monday

(((((((A PHOTO IS WORTH 1000 WORDS.)))))))

This next assignment will require you to do some more thinking before you shoot the photos.

~NO PHOTOS WILL BE TAKEN IN CLASS!~  So, don't ask.

You must take the photos at home, or at school during lunch, etc.  If you do not have photos by Next Monday, you will be writing a paper in place of the next assignment. You've been warned (and you have a WHOLE WEEK!)

_____________________________________
Rules
  • You will be telling a story using only 5 photos.
  • Choose any subject, but the entire sequence should visually tell a story.
  • A title is the only words that can be used.  Rely on the photographs to bring the story to life
  • You MUST include a title, but don't write the title on ANY of the photos.
  • The title can help guide the viewer to better understand your story.
  • DO NOT PUT ANY WORDS ON THE PHOTOS.

Guidelines for Telling a Story

Guidelines are not rules, but a formula that can be used to suit your creative imagination. Several avenues exist for story telling, such as journalistic reporting, sequential photos that reveal a moment, photographic poetry, and narrative.

The following guidelines are for narrative.

A good story has characters in action with a beginning, middle, and an ending. Fortunately a lot of information can be given in a single photograph, enhancing the limitations of five photographs for your story. Location, time, and atmosphere aid viewer imagination. Keep individual composition in mind, but pack as many story telling elements in one photograph as possible to develop an action.

Remember:  these are just guidelines.  Creative people may not use these, and be even more successful!

You  may want to use the following format...but I would prefer you were more creative and came up with your own idea.

1st photo: establish characters and location.
2nd photo: create a situation with possibilities of what might happen.
3rd photo: involve the characters in the situation.
4th photo: build to probable outcomes
5th photo: have a logical, but surprising, end.

Also, don't forget to give your Narrative a title, but do not put words on the photos.

Be thinking about this assignment for the next few days...but we will work more on it after we finish the Blur pictures, which will probably be on Thursday.

Examples will follow on a post tomorrow.

Beginning Spaced Out

REMEMBER: Keep "merging layer" down from time to time.  You should also save to your desktop or flash drive every once in awhile to avoid losing your work.

To begin construction of your photo design, create a new blank page in Paint.NET that is 24" wide by 18" tall at 200 dpi resolution. You will paste your image pieces onto this blank canvas to construct your image.

Be warned! You will have to reduce the size of each photograph -- they will be too large to fit all of them onto the blank page. To do this...Go to Image Menu.  Click on Resize.  Then select "By Percentage" and change the percentage down to 10 or 15%.  You can then copy and paste your smaller image into your 24" by 18" canvas.

Identity Photos

Photos for Identity Assignment are due on TOMORROW! ---(Wednesday March 2, 2011)

Today you should have just completed a Guided Reading WS that goes along with Chapter 5 of the Focus on Photography Book.

NOW, you will post a paragraph on your blog that answers the following question:  What is an autobiography? What is a self-portrait?  How are an autobiography and a self-portrait the same?  How are they different? This post should be at least 2 paragraphs. It is worth 20 points.

Note: If you do not have images tomorrow, you will complete an alternative assignment.

For your alternative assignment, you will write:

a 2 page, (double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font, 1 inch margin)
autobiography of your life.   What are the major events in your life that have made
                                 you who you are?

Tuesday Feb. 22

Today you will edit 3 of your 30 images that use our rules of composition

Try to select 3 that "go together" as a series, but if you cannot that is ok.

You are free for this assignment to edit the photos how you like.  I only ask that you avoid drastically changing the image by using Paint.NET's Effects menu.  You may change the hue, contrast, saturation, intensity, curves, and photos may be sepia, color, or black&white.  But, you can still have fun with them.  I suggest that you edit them so they look like they belong together.  Again, avoid using ink sketch, oil painting, distortions, or similar functions.

It should only take one class day to edit these photos. Post them to your blog today!

Here is an example.

Note that she has used the rule of thirds in all of these.

1st Paint.NET Assignment! YIPPIE!!!!!

Today, follow the directions on the handout that you were given. You will want to keep this handout until you are familar with the process.

Click this link to download Paint.NET v.3.5.6

Here is a link to http://www.blogger.com/

Here is what your your blog post should look like for today:

You can click on the image above to see it better.  The finished post is also shown below.  Yours should look similar, but with a different image and different text, of course.

Paint.NET Exploration Assignment

I created this image using the Paint brush tool.  Then I used the Rectangle tool to create the squares.  I used a smaller brush width to make the squares get skinnier in the center.  I used the Ellipse (Circle) tool to draw the circle in the center.

Blog Requirements

Starting today, you will be expected to create a new post in your blog every single day that you are in Photo Art Class.  These will be graded every Friday.  NO EXCUSES. (You cannot write 5 posts on Friday and expect to get your points.)  Each post is worth 5 points, so you will have a total of about 25 points per week (for a normal school week)

It would be a good idea to post your photos to your blog regularly (Everyday is best) It shows the process of your artwork and allows other students to view your work and make comments that might help.

You will be expected to view classmates blogs regularly (links will be added to http://www.crouchphotoart.blogspot.com/ and post at least 1 comment on each student's blog per assignment.  You are expected to comment about their artwork and make suggestions, not just about things going on in class, school, gossip, etc.  These will be graded as well, but I haven't decided on the points it will be worth yet.

Every photo art assignment will be turned in to me using your blog.  You will post each final assignment to the blog and I will grade it from there.  (There will some written work, some worksheets, some emailed assignments too.)

Create Your Blog!

Now, you will create a blog using blogger. Goto http://www.blogger.com/ and follow the directions there to set up a free blog.
You will use this blog as a place to journal, vent about your photography assignments, keep a log of ideas, etc. You will be able to post photos of your work here too eventually. There are a lot of programs out there designed to help you make your blog look cool. :) Explore the Internet (search "blogger templates" and ask me for help if you need it.
http://www.pyzam.com/ is another site to check out. Make sure you check for "blogger templates" as they have other site templates, too.

http://www.deluxetemplates.net/ has some neat stuff, but I've never used it before

You may want to search for other photography or art blogs to get some inspiration!!
Check out http://picture-of-the-day.com/ for some nice photos....

Continue Your PowerPoint

Go Go GO!  Keep up the good work on these PowerPoint Presentations. It looks like we will be presenting these on Monday, maybe Tuesday.

Each Presentation should include the following:
  • 1 Title Slide    (with your name & the person's name that you are researching)
  • 10 Information Slides
  • 5-15 Image Slides   (ALL images used should be cited!)
  • 1 Source Slide         (With the website addresses that you used as sources.  DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA.  You just need to write the address, not a full citation)

(NOTE: You may combine info/image onto one slide and it will count as both!)

Tuesday 1/25

First, I need you all to turn in your work from yesterday.  You may finish it now, if needed.

Yesterday I'm not sure if you all had time to fully research the photographers and decide on three possible ones.

So, do that now, if needed.

I have a sign-up sheet for the photographers.  Once you know which one you want to do, you will write your name under the photographer that you want to research.

Then, you may begin working on your PowerPoint Presentation -- more instructions below.

Select 3 Photographers

Monday 1-24-2011

Sorry that I can't be at school today guys!

You should have completed the Chapter 1 Guided Reading WS.  Then, you will complete the History of Photography WS by searching the Internet for the answers.

Then, I have something else for you to do!

Your first big assignment in this class is going to be a research project about the History of Photography.

Eventually, you will be creating a PowerPoint Presentation about one photographer from the list below.

Today, I just want you to do some research on the names from the list of photographers below.  I will give you some links to websites to check out below and you can also try Googling their names and using Google Images.

(Remember: EVEN THOUGH YOU GOOGLED THEIR NAME, THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT EVERY IMAGE THAT RETURNS IS ONE OF THEIR PHOTOS!! You may have to do a little reading to make sure that it was one of their photographs!)

In conclusion today you will...

  1. Spend some time looking at their images & reading some information about the photographers from the links below,
  2. Select THREE different names that you are interested in researching. (I want everyone to do a different photographer, so you may not be able to research your first choice) You will be assigned ONE photographer when I return.
  3. Write down the three names on a sheet of paper (along with your name!) and give it to the sub by the end of the class.
  4. If you have any extra classtime, I am going to put some links for you to explore below.
